I’ve been asked to give my thoughts on the recent changes to IELTS or the International English Language Testing System and its new changes to a more computer base test. Initially, these changes have happened in my absence and like many concerned parties such as students or teachers like myself, we have a few questions on how this new system is going to work.

I’ve reached out to a few current Examiners in China, but even they have little to say about the new system as they too are adjusting to how it works. I’ve yet to get any feedback from candidates who have tried it. Still, I have some ideas I would like to share with you on this.

As a former Examiner who sat well over 2000 interviews for Cambridge in a short but intense time with IELTS in China, I think I can provide some insight in what it means to switch over from the all too intimidating face to face interview to what seems to have become the standard ways these days of online communication.  At this point, who isn’t used to being online and speaking to someone in Zoom, Zhumu, WeCon, CC Talk, or WeChat?

I would suggest that candidates can use this to their advantage, especially since they can now record their sessions in real time. What a great learning experience and tool to improve their English! Online training and assessment are going to be the new normal and the sooner we get used to this the better off we will be in adapting to the process versus being afraid of it.

We also can look to other online language exams like TOFEL IBT or PTE and can see that candidates actually fair better than the classic “locked in a boiler room with a foreign stranger model”.  I can testify that even the most prepared IELTS candidates often crumple at the sight of an Examiner upon reaching the interview room. Many of the test centers in the multiple cities I sat in sometimes were nothing more than closet with a desk. It often felt like an interrogation rather than a friendly interview. So, in that sense, I welcome a change in the interview process, especially one that seems to give candidates greater control over the affective variables that often lower their speaking marks.

As the tests are still done onsite at certified test centers, it is certain that IELTS has done all it can to maintain its standard for test validation. Up until the time of the pandemic, an average of 2.2 million people were sitting IELTS every year. So we can see the motivation to get things back on track, even if it means finally investing in the much needed upgrades in technology to bring the interview process into the current times.

The face to face interview was one of the key marketing points for IELTS in relation to universities and employers. It had taken pride in its gatekeeping abilities to facilitate the standardization of testing language abilities. In some ways the “gold standard” of language tests, but times have changed and IELTS is finally catching up to the way the rest of the world is doing business these days, online.

That being said, I applaud the changes to the new test format. I believe this will actually give Chinese students a much better experience and fairer chances at the exam that has held them back for some time. It’s been no secret that if a Chinese candidate could not crack IELTS repeatedly in speaking that moving onto TOFEL-IBT might finally give them a shot at success. The recorded and integrated speaking component online with a computer is a structure that candidates can formulate much easier once they understand the desired outcomes. Granted in the new computer based IELTS candidates will still face an Examiner but the sting of sitting in the room with a stranger may be lighter if seated at a desk with a headset looking at them on a screen.
